Paper register vs gym software: what actually changes
A paper register is fast, costs nothing and never goes down — which is why gyms keep using one. What it cannot do is tell you who is about to leave, who owes money, or what last March looked like. Software earns its place on those three questions and very little else.
Where the register genuinely wins
It is faster than any screen for a member the desk already knows, it works in a power cut, and it needs no training. Any software replacing it should be judged against that, and most of the frustration with gym software comes from products that are slower at the one thing the register did well.
What the register cannot do
It cannot tell you that a member who came four times a week has come once this month. It cannot produce last year's revenue by branch. It cannot send a renewal reminder. And it cannot be in two places at once, which is where multi-branch gyms come unstuck.
The switch itself
Export or type in your current member list, keep the register running alongside for a fortnight, and compare. If the software is slower at the door after two weeks of practice, it is the wrong software.
